The city of Attalla occupies the site of an Indian village that had considerable importance during the Creek War of 1813-14. The village was located along the banks of Big Wills Creek and Line Creek. The 44th General Assembly of the Alabama Legislature incorporated the town on February 5, 1872. Through the years the town was known as Bennettsville, New Town or Newton, The Junction, Bainsville and finally in 1892 it was formally and officially named Attalla. There seems to be no firm source regarding the official meaning of the name. Two suggested meanings are "mountain" (Cherokee) or "my home". Attalla-My Home is now officially recognized as the meaning and a poem by that title is displayed in The Museum of Attalla. It was referenced in the Nashville Republican Banner in December, 1873.
