This year, the Gadsden Fire Department is starting a new tradition — the inaugural 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb event and walk — to remember that tragic day and to help support the annual Toys from Santa drive.
What's a 9/11 stair climb? "Each 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb participant pays tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center.
"Your tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of an FDNY member but symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others. Through firefighter and community participation, we ensure that each of the 343 firefighters is honored and that the world knows we will never forget."
There will also be a 3.43-mile walk with no stairs available as a participation option.
Funds raised will go towards the annual Toys from Santa program, which helped 500 children in Gadsden receive gifts last Christmas.
You can do the stair climb in whatever gear you would like! full turnouts, partial turnouts, with a weighted vest, or just regular workout clothes.
