GMA Exhibit: Alvin Roy Retrospective: Southern Patchwork

Please join us for a gallery talk and reception with the artist on Thursday, February 15 at 6:30 pm. He will also present a gallery talk geared towards students on Friday, February 16 at 3:30 pm, but all ages are welcome.

The artist from the Hardin Center’s current exhibition, Alvin Roy Retrospective: Southern Patchwork, will host two gallery talks as he describes his work, his process, and his life. The first opportunity to hear from the artist is Thursday, February 15 at 6 pm. A reception will follow the gallery talk. The following day, Friday, February 16, will feature a special gallery talk geared more towards students at 3:30 pm, but students and interested visitors of all ages are welcome. Both events are free and open to the public.

Born and raised in Houston, Texas during the turbulent 1950s, Alvin Roy is a product of the Civil Rights transformation that swept through the United States. His parents fought against Jim Crow laws and preserved family traditions dating back from before the Civil War, leaving Alvin with a strong historic legacy that informs and strengthens his art.

The exhibition was organized for the Hardin Center through Katharine T. Carter and Associates and was made possible by the City of Gadsden, Alabama State Council on the Arts, The Daniel Foundation of Alabama, and Exchange Bank. It marks the first exhibition in the Hardin Center’s new ground-floor gallery. The exhibition will remain on view through June 8. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday and admission is free.

Gadsden Cultural Arts Foundation Executive Director Tom Banks remarked, “Alvin Roy is an incredibly gifted artist and his work is very different from other exhibitions we’ve hosted. Alvin is also a kind, dynamic person with boundless energy. I know our visitors will enjoy hearing from him about his work. We are quite honored to have Alvin’s work in our new gallery.”
