The Hardin Center presents A Lowcountry Sea Island Coil Basket Workshop with Jery B. Taylor
Jery is a descendant of the West Africans os Sierra Leone where her style of unique basket weaving originates. Born and raised in Mount Pleasant, SC, Jery was taught the art of basket weaving by her grandmother at the age of 5. The Lowcountry Coil Basket or Sweetgrass Basket is one of the oldest crafts of African origin in America. Today they are purchased by museums and art collectors throughout the world. Ms. Taylor’s baskets are on exhibit in the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, the San Francisco airport, and the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, SC. A basket’s value increases with age and will last indefinitely with proper care.
The workshops are $20 per person and include a starter basket that Ms. Taylor will show participants how to finish.
